How to Add Seniority to an Israeli Driver’s License in Spain: The Complete Guide
If you have an Israeli driver’s license and want to preserve its seniority in your Spanish driver’s license as well – you’ve come to the right place! It’s important to note that the steps in this guide are relevant only for those who have already received a Spanish license. To obtain a Spanish driver’s license, you must pass a theory test and a practical driving test, after which you can begin the process of adding the Israeli seniority.
Many Israelis living in Spain encounter the question of how to maintain the seniority of their Israeli driver’s license in their Spanish license. Here is the complete and updated guide to all the steps you’ll need to go through—from obtaining the required document to receiving your Spanish license with the updated seniority.
Step 1: Obtain a Document from the Embassy
For the Spanish Ministry of Transport to recognize the seniority from your Israeli license, you need to obtain a special document issued by the Israeli Ministry of Transport, translated into Spanish and signed by the Israeli consul. The document is provided free of charge, but if you are unable to physically go to the embassy, you will be required to pay for shipping to receive the certificate by mail.
How to get the document: You must contact the embassy via email and request the document. If needed, you can receive further instructions regarding delivery and collection.
Required documents:
The document from the embassy (including the Israeli consul’s signature)
A copy of the Israeli driver’s license (certified as a true copy)
Step 2: Stamp from the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Once you have the document from the embassy, you must have it stamped by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs provides stamps called Legalizaciones which confirm the authenticity of the document.
Address of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Madrid: Calle del Gral. Pardiñas, 55, Salamanca, 28006 Madrid
Step 3: Obtain the Spanish Driver’s License
Once you have the document with the official stamp, you must submit it to the Spanish Ministry of Transport (DGT) at the following address:
Calle de Arturo Soria, 143, Cdad. Lineal, 28043 Madrid

There, you will need to present your Spanish driver’s license along with the document from the embassy and pay a fee of €20. You will then receive a temporary license with seniority until the updated license arrives.
When you receive the official plastic license, you will see a note at the bottom on the back with code 106.4 indicating the seniority date of your Spanish license.
Tip: Date of License Issuance
The Israeli driver’s license does not state the exact date of issuance, so the clerk may ask you what date to write. You can suggest using the original issuance date, and if needed, add today’s date.
Good luck, and safe travels in Spain!
