Madrid, being the capital of Spain, offers a rich blend of history, art, culture, and modernity. Here are some must-visit sites in Madrid:


  • Prado Museum: One of the most famous art museums in the world, the Prado houses an extensive collection of classical European art, including masterpieces by renowned artists such as Velázquez, Goya, and Titian.If you want to visit the Prado Museum for free, you can go from Monday to Saturday between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM, and on Sundays and holidays between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Note that these times are usually very crowded, and sometimes entrance is restricted when it gets too busy.

  • Royal Palace of Madrid: The official residence of the Spanish royal family (although the King and Queen do not live there), the Royal Palace is open to visitors most days of the year. It’s an architectural marvel featuring luxurious rooms, grand staircases, and beautiful gardens.

  • Puerta del Sol: Madrid’s central square, Puerta del Sol is a bustling hub with historical significance and iconic landmarks, including the famous clock and the Kilometre Zero marker, the point from which the distances of Spain’s six main roads are measured.

  • Plaza Mayor: A picturesque square surrounded by elegant buildings, Plaza Mayor is a major landmark where local events and street performances take place. Toward the end of November, a Christmas market is set up. The square is also surrounded by cafes and restaurants.

  • Retiro Park: A vast green oasis in the heart of the city, Retiro Park offers a peaceful retreat with beautiful gardens, a boating lake, and cultural events.

  • Gran Vía: Madrid’s main shopping and entertainment street, Gran Vía is lined with theatres, shops, restaurants, and iconic buildings. Several rooftops along the street are worth visiting.

  • Puerta de Alcalá: A monumental gate located in the city center, Puerta de Alcalá is one of Madrid’s major symbols. It stands at the northwest corner of Retiro Park.

  • Plaza de Cibeles: A striking square featuring a stunning fountain, Plaza de Cibeles is surrounded by iconic buildings, including the City Hall and the Bank of Spain.

  • Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum: Another renowned art museum in Madrid, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum showcases an impressive collection of European art from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.

  • Santiago Bernabéu Stadium: For football fans, visiting the legendary Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, home of Real Madrid, is a must. Stadium tours are available.
